Accomplishments
1. Spring Fling
Program
Sponsored by the
Children's Roundtable and the Government Documents Roundtable, Peggy Turnbull, Bluefield College, and Ann
Henriksson, Shepherd University, presented "Smokey the Bear, Canine Heroes, and
Ben's Birthday: Collection Development Issues for Web-based Reference Sources for Children."
The well attended session covered the latest research on children's use of the
Internet, criteria for evaluating free
sites, a review of recommended of sites, and a discussion of how to make
the sites accessible either through the catalog or a webliography. The reviewed
children's sites are available at: http://www.shepherd.edu/libweb/find/guides/kids_websites.html.
ALA's Great
Web Sites for Kids also contains sites and selection criteria at: http://www.ala.org/greatsites.
2. GODORT annual
meeting
GODORT held its
annual meeting at WVU's Wise Library in May. Christine
Chang, WVU, and Majed Kader, Marshall U, reported on the
Spring Depository Library Conference. Ann Henriksson
and Peggy Turnbull reported on
Spring Fling. Ann also discussed her attendance at ALA Legislative Day. Everyone
was appreciative of WVLA's funding for the refreshments and lunch. As usual
there was a lively discussion of current depository issues, especially GPO
proposals for changing the distribution of documents and the ramifications of
the move to almost all electronic documents.
Jim Rogers, Salem
University, was elected
incoming chair.
Upcoming Events
GODORT will have two
programs at the fall 2006 conference: Marian Amour- Germmen, WVU, will present
a session on trademarks entitled: "Trading Up: Helping Users Search U.S.
Trademarks." Majed Kader, Marshall U, will present a session on coal resources
entitled: "Coal and Coal Mining: Internet Resources for Public and School
Libraries."
Farewells and
Welcomes
Summer 2006 saw
position changes for 2 long standing GODORT members. Peggy
Turnbull has given up her document duties at Bluefield and is now concentrating on public
services, serials, and archives. David Shau, Kanawha County Public Library, is
now WV Librarian. Olivia Bravo has taken over David's document duties at
Kanawha Public. Both Peggy and David will be sorely missed by all WV documents
librarians. Over the years they have made significant contributions to WVLA
GODORT and to WVLA conference programs. We will miss their enthusiasm, their
thoughtful insights, and their creativity in promoting document use. At the same time we welcome Olivia into the
WV GODORT community.
