Intellectual Freedom Committee Annual Report 2006

The past year was filled with opportunities to improve our library services and preserve the integrity of services to the public.

Jane Levitan of the Intellectual Freedom Committee and Karen Hiser, Administrative Consultant from the Library Commission attended the Law for Librarians Conference in Chicago.  The Conference brought together the IFC chairpersons from all 50 States thanks to a major grant from the Ford Foundation.  The conference discussed confidentiality, meeting room policies, exhibit and display policies, internet filtering, labeling, adding content and many of the other "hot button" challenges facing librarians.  Copies of the information obtained are available upon request from Jane in Martinsburg.

Jane Levitan attended a conference on the special legal issues facing librarian in services to children 17 and younger.

The Committee co-sponsored a session at the Huntington Annual Meeting discussing meeting room, exhibit space and information rack policies.   Christopher Wilton, esq. interpreted West Virginia's legal statues for the session. Librarians were requested to bring copies of their policies for a workshop and discussion.  A follow-up workshop will be held at Spring Fling.

The Committee ends the year in excellent financial shape.
