Social Responsibilities Roundtable Report

Submitted by Allen Johnson, Chairperson

September, 2005

The WVLA Social Responsibilities Roundtable sponsored a well-attended session at 2005 Spring Fling, titled "Social Challenges in Your Library."  The thesis revolved around the rights of members of neo-Nazi organizations to use library resources along with the rights and responsibilities of libraries to educate their service population on racialist ideologies and movements.

Social Responsibilities Roundtable in conjunction with the Intellectual Freedom Committee also sponsored a table highlighting materials that can be useful to proactively promote social issues dialogue within a community.  Materials included banned books, videos from the Human Rights Video Collection, and multi-cultural awareness.

Committee work involved working jointly with Intellectual Freedom to invite Asra Nomani to speak at Annual Conference on women's rights within her Islamic religion.

A survey of WV libraries as to their social advocacy efforts is not yet done.

At this time there are no budgeted expenditures to report.
