Libraries and Laptops: What Students Think and Librarians Experience (PDF 1672 KB)
Ma Lei Hsieh, Assistant Librarian, Monmouth University Library, West Long Beach, NJ
and Hugh Holden, Librarian, Piedmont College

We will present findings from a series of surveys which we conducted at Monmouth University, West Long Branch, New Jersey, during March of 2005 and March of 2007. Usage of the Library’s lending laptops was far smaller than anticipated when the program was first established. To learn why, we took a two track approach: we polled the M.U. students not once but twice; and we asked librarians at other institutions about their library laptops and wireless access.

New and Once Lost Films, Web Movies/Audios and Audio Books on WV and Appalachia 2008 (PDF37 KB)
Steve Fesenmaier, WVLC

The West Virginia Labor History Association in cooperation with The South Charleston Museum presented the WV/US/Appalachian premieres of two new hour-long films about WV Labor history. “AsturianUS” is a 52-minute film made by Spanish filmmaker Luis Argeo about immigrants from the northern Spanish province of Asturias immigrating to Harrison County and Pennsylvania at the turn of the 20th century. “The Battle of Local 5668” is about the 1990 Ravenswood Lockout that became a landmark in post-WWII labor history. Barbara Kopple of “Harlan County, USA” fame made a film about it – “Locked Out in America,” and a notable book about it was published. This new film shows labor activists making their protest into a global reality – just as Marc Rich, the renegade billionaire made it a prime example of what globalization really means to the average American.
