Instruction for Training Student Assistants at a university Research Library

This session will present an overview and demonstration of the efficacy of using online PowerPoint modules to train student library assistants. This form of computer-based instruction provides interactive, standardized, and accessible training to students within a self-paced tutorial format. The learning process is designed to provide consistent, comprehensive, engaging, and responsive instruction to all assistants, regardless of the shifting demands on departments. The result is fast and reliable acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide quality library services to our research public.

The "No Child Left Behind" Act puts an emphasis on science education. It is important for students to have access to full-text, impartial, and current science information to complete homework. The National Library of Medicine and other federal agencies produce databases that are used by public and school librarians assisting students.
